The Science of Better Light.
What light therapy does to your cells
What's ideal use for my needs?
There isn't one universal “ideal fluence” for PBM. The target depends on wavelength, irradiance, tissue depth, treatment area, pulse structure, and the biological endpoint. FDA specifically recommends reporting wavelength, fluence, spot size, output mode, and irradiance when evaluating PBM devices. U.S. Food and Drug Administration
| Application | Target Fluence | Premium | Enterprise | Custom |
| Skin rejuvenation | 4 - 20 j/cm2 | |||
| Pain & inflammation | 4 - 20 j/cm2 | |||
| Muscle recovery | 20 - 25 j/cm2 | |||
| Hair restoration & growth | 4 - 10 j/cm2 |
1. Skin rejuvenation
A major PBM review notes that many researchers recommend approximately 4–10 J/cm², although protocols extending toward ~50 J/cm² have also been reported. PubMed
For a consumer face mask, we recommend a mask accurately delivering something like 5–10 J/cm² rather than a mask simply maximizing LED output.
2. Pain
A systematic review of acute pain found effective experimental doses spanning approximately 0.3–19 J/cm², with a median around 7.5 J/cm².
So ~5–10 J/cm² is a useful starting range for investigating superficial applications, but deeper musculoskeletal targets may require a different protocol.
3. Muscle recovery
Research on exercise performance/recovery frequently uses substantially more total energy, particularly for large muscles. For muscle recovery specifically, a 2024 systematic review/meta-analysis of 21 studies identified 24.16 J/cm² as an optimal energy-density point for several lower-limb recovery outcomes.
4. Hair regrowth
A systematic review/meta-analysis of androgenetic alopecia found that increasing per-session fluence was associated with increased hair density, although this should not be interpreted as proof that “more is always better.” PubMed
Recommend approximately 4–10 J/cm² per session initially then trying higher levels.

Muscle Performance & Recovery
Research suggests that photobiomodulation (PBM) applied to skeletal muscle may help support physical performance and recovery. Studies involving athletes have found potential benefits including reduced muscle fatigue and improved recovery following exercise, possibly through effects on oxidative stress and cellular energy production.

Skin Rejuvenation & Wound Healing
Photobiomodulation (PBM) has been extensively studied for its potential to support skin health and the body's natural healing processes. Research suggests that red and near-infrared light may support cellular activity, collagen production, and tissue repair, with potential applications in wound healing and the appearance of scars.

Inflammation & Recovery
PBM may help support the body's natural inflammatory response. Research has identified potential effects on inflammatory signaling and cytokine activity, suggesting applications for managing inflammation associated with muscle and joint discomfort and other conditions.

Hair Growth & Scalp Health
Red and near-infrared light therapy has been studied as a non-invasive approach for supporting hair growth. Certain FDA-cleared light-based devices are indicated for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss). Research suggests that photobiomodulation may stimulate hair follicles and support the active growth phase of the hair cycle, potentially improving hair density and thickness over time.

Mental Clarity & Cognitive Function
Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) is an emerging area of research investigating how light may influence brain function. Early studies suggest potential benefits for cognitive performance, memory, and mental clarity, possibly through effects on cerebral blood flow and mitochondrial activity in brain cells.

How often should I use red light therapy?
For most devices, we recommend following the manufacturer's instructions. Many people incorporate red light therapy into their wellness routine 3–7 times per week, with sessions typically lasting 10–20 minutes, depending on the device and treatment area. Consistency is generally more important than longer sessions.
How long until I see results?
Everyone's experience is different. Some people notice changes within a few weeks, while others may require several months of consistent use. Results depend on factors such as your wellness goals, the device used, and how regularly you follow the recommended treatment schedule.
Does it hurt?
No. Red light therapy is a non-invasive and painless treatment. Most users describe the experience as relaxing, with a gentle warming sensation depending on the device. There are no needles, medications, or recovery time required.
Is it safe?
Red light therapy has been widely studied and is considered safe for most people when used as directed. Our products are designed to use non-ionizing red and near-infrared light, which is different from UV light and does not tan or burn the skin when used according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, have light sensitivity, or are taking medications that increase sensitivity to light, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider before use.
Can I overuse it?
More isn't always better. Using your device more frequently or for longer than recommended is unlikely to provide additional benefits and may increase the chance of temporary skin irritation or discomfort. Following the manufacturer's recommended treatment schedule is the best way to achieve consistent results.
