Skin Rejuvenation & Light Therapy

The Science of Light for Healthier-Looking Skin

Take a look about how light therapy can help your skin look and feel healthier.

For decades, dermatologists have explored the interaction between light and skin. Today, photobiomodulation (PBM)—the use of specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light—is an increasingly studied approach to supporting skin health and appearance.

Unlike ultraviolet (UV) light, which can damage skin, PBM uses non-UV wavelengths designed to interact with cells without intentionally causing the type of tissue injury associated with UV exposure. Dermatologists use light-based therapies in a variety of clinical settings, while lower-intensity LED devices are also available for home use.

Red Light & Skin

Red light is commonly studied in dermatology for its potential effects on skin texture, fine lines, redness, and overall skin appearance. Research suggests that red and near-infrared light may influence cellular activity and signaling involved in processes such as collagen production, inflammation, and tissue repair.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that studies of red-light LED treatments have reported improvements in areas including fine lines and wrinkles, rough-feeling skin, redness, discoloration, and skin laxity. However, results can vary considerably between devices and treatment protocols, and additional research is needed to establish optimal wavelengths, doses, and treatment schedules.

Supporting the Skin's Natural Processes

PBM is thought to work by delivering specific wavelengths of light that can be absorbed by cellular components. This interaction may influence mitochondrial activity and downstream cellular signaling.

In skin, these responses are being investigated for their potential role in processes associated with collagen synthesis, cellular repair, oxidative balance, and inflammatory signaling. Research into wound healing has also found evidence that PBM can influence biological pathways involved in tissue repair, although the precise mechanisms and optimal treatment parameters continue to be studied.

Light Therapy & Acne

Light therapy has also become an area of interest in acne care.

Different wavelengths can have different biological effects. Blue light has been studied particularly for acne because of its interaction with Cutibacterium acnes, while red light has been investigated for its potential effects on inflammation and skin recovery. Combination red-and-blue LED devices have therefore received considerable attention in dermatology research.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of six randomized clinical trials found that at-home red and/or blue LED devices were associated with reductions in inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions, with generally favorable tolerability. The authors concluded that these devices may represent a useful non-pharmacological option for people with mild-to-moderate acne.

Importantly, light therapy isn't a universal replacement for conventional acne treatment. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that light and laser treatments can be useful components of an acne treatment plan, but results vary and combination approaches may be appropriate depending on the individual.

More Than Skin Deep

One of the reasons PBM has attracted interest in dermatology is that its effects are not simply cosmetic. Researchers are studying how light can influence biological processes within skin cells themselves.

Studies of LED therapy have investigated applications ranging from acne and skin rejuvenation to wound healing and inflammatory skin conditions. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials found particularly encouraging evidence for acne, certain viral skin conditions, and acute wound healing, while emphasizing that evidence for other dermatologic applications remains more limited.

This distinction is important: light therapy is an evolving field of dermatology, not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Different conditions may require different wavelengths, doses, treatment frequencies, and delivery systems.

Why Wavelength & Dose Matter

Not all light therapy is the same.

The biological response depends on factors including:

  • Wavelength — determines the characteristics of the light and how it interacts with tissue
  • Irradiance — the amount of optical power delivered to an area
  • Fluence — the total energy delivered over a treatment
  • Treatment time — how long the skin is exposed
  • Treatment frequency — how often treatments are performed
  • Distance and device design — particularly for larger-area LED systems

Research has used substantially different wavelengths and treatment parameters, making it difficult to directly compare every study or assume that results from one device will apply to another.

A Science-First Approach

At The Red Light Store, we believe effective light therapy starts with understanding the science—not simply putting a red light in front of your skin.

PBM research continues to evolve, but the growing body of dermatology literature provides an increasingly interesting picture of how carefully selected wavelengths of light may support the skin's natural biological processes.

The goal isn't to change your skin overnight. It's to support the biology that helps your skin look and function at its best.

The Takeaway

Red and near-infrared light therapy is an emerging, non-invasive technology with growing applications in dermatology. Research suggests potential benefits for skin appearance, acne management, and tissue-repair processes, while also highlighting the importance of appropriate wavelength, dose, and treatment protocol.

As with any technology, more research is needed to determine exactly which protocols work best for specific skin concerns.

Light, when used thoughtfully, is more than illumination. It's a biological signal.

How often should I use red light therapy?
For most devices, we recommend following the manufacturer's instructions. Many people incorporate red light therapy into their wellness routine 3–7 times per week, with sessions typically lasting 10–20 minutes, depending on the device and treatment area. Consistency is generally more important than longer sessions.
How long until I see results?
Everyone's experience is different. Some people notice changes within a few weeks, while others may require several months of consistent use. Results depend on factors such as your wellness goals, the device used, and how regularly you follow the recommended treatment schedule.
Does it hurt?
No. Red light therapy is a non-invasive and painless treatment. Most users describe the experience as relaxing, with a gentle warming sensation depending on the device. There are no needles, medications, or recovery time required.
Is it safe?
Red light therapy has been widely studied and is considered safe for most people when used as directed. Our products are designed to use non-ionizing red and near-infrared light, which is different from UV light and does not tan or burn the skin when used according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, have light sensitivity, or are taking medications that increase sensitivity to light, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider before use.
Can I overuse it?
More isn't always better. Using your device more frequently or for longer than recommended is unlikely to provide additional benefits and may increase the chance of temporary skin irritation or discomfort. Following the manufacturer's recommended treatment schedule is the best way to achieve consistent results.
Which device is right for me?
The best device depends on your goals.
  • Face Masks – Ideal for skincare and facial rejuvenation.
  • Hair Growth Caps – Designed to support healthy hair growth.
  • Panels – Great for larger treatment areas, muscle recovery, joints, and full-body wellness.
