The Science of Better Light.

What light therapy does to your cells

Red and Near-infrared spectrum

Light That Works With Your Body.
Unlike UV light, red and near-infrared light are non-ionizing and do not tan or burn the skin when used as directed.
Instead, they provide light energy that supports your body's natural cellular processes—without needles, medications, or downtime.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the scientific term for using specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate biological processes in the body.

How it works

Red and near-infrared light can penetrate the skin and be absorbed by cellular components, particularly structures involved in producing energy. This can influence cellular signaling and processes associated with:

⚡ Cellular energy production

🔄 Tissue repair and recovery

🧬 Collagen production and skin health

💪 Muscle recovery and performance

🧠 Cellular signaling and nervous-system function

🩸 Circulation and blood-flow signaling

🌿 Regulation of inflammatory responses

PBM is also commonly called red light therapy. It's wellness powered by light.

Light Wavelengths and Cellular Response in Photobiomodulation

At the cellular level, one of the key targets of PBM is the mitochondria—the structures responsible for producing much of the cell's usable energy.

Certain wavelengths of red and near-infrared light can be absorbed by cellular chromophores, including components associated with the mitochondrial respiratory chain.

This interaction can influence cellular signaling and mitochondrial function, including processes involved in energy production, oxidative balance, blood flow, and cellular communication.

The result isn't simply that light "heats" the tissue. PBM is primarily a photochemical interaction rather than a heating effect.

Wellness begins at the cellular level.

Light absorbed by cellular components can influence mitochondrial activity and ATP production—ATP being the primary energy currency used by cells.

🧬 Influences Cellular Signaling

PBM can affect signaling pathways involved in cellular activity, communication, and adaptation. These signals may influence processes such as cell proliferation, migration, and tissue remodeling.

🩸 Supports Circulation

PBM may influence pathways involved in vascular function and nitric oxide signaling, potentially supporting local blood flow and oxygen availability.

🛡️ Modulates Oxidative Stress

Light therapy can influence the cellular response to reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress.

🔄 Supports Natural Recovery Processes

By influencing energy production and cellular signaling, PBM may support the body's normal biological processes involved in recovery and tissue maintenance.

Light Wavelengths & Skin Penetration

Multiple wavelengths. One powerful partnership.

Red Light

630–670 nm
Supports healthy-looking skin and is commonly used in cosmetic wellness routines to improve the appearance of skin tone and texture.

Near-Infrared Light

810–850 nm
Penetrates deeper into tissue and is widely used in recovery and wellness routines focused on muscles, joints, and overall performance.
Together, these clinically studied wavelengths create a versatile therapy experience designed to support your everyday wellness goals.

What's ideal use for my needs?

There isn't one universal “ideal fluence” for PBM. The target depends on wavelength, irradiance, tissue depth, treatment area, pulse structure, and the biological endpoint. FDA specifically recommends reporting wavelength, fluence, spot size, output mode, and irradiance when evaluating PBM devices. U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Application Target Fluence Premium Enterprise Custom
Skin rejuvenation 4 - 20 j/cm2
Pain & inflammation 4 - 20 j/cm2
Muscle recovery 20 - 25 j/cm2
Hair restoration & growth 4 - 10 j/cm2
1. Skin rejuvenation

A major PBM review notes that many researchers recommend approximately 4–10 J/cm², although protocols extending toward ~50 J/cm² have also been reported. PubMed

For a consumer face mask, we recommend a mask accurately delivering something like 5–10 J/cm² rather than a mask simply maximizing LED output.

2. Pain

A systematic review of acute pain found effective experimental doses spanning approximately 0.3–19 J/cm², with a median around 7.5 J/cm².

So ~5–10 J/cm² is a useful starting range for investigating superficial applications, but deeper musculoskeletal targets may require a different protocol.

3. Muscle recovery

Research on exercise performance/recovery frequently uses substantially more total energy, particularly for large muscles. For muscle recovery specifically, a 2024 systematic review/meta-analysis of 21 studies identified 24.16 J/cm² as an optimal energy-density point for several lower-limb recovery outcomes.

4. Hair regrowth

A systematic review/meta-analysis of androgenetic alopecia found that increasing per-session fluence was associated with increased hair density, although this should not be interpreted as proof that “more is always better.” PubMed

Recommend approximately 4–10 J/cm² per session initially then trying higher levels.

Hair Growth & Scalp Health

Red and near-infrared light therapy has been studied as a non-invasive approach for supporting hair growth. Certain FDA-cleared light-based devices are indicated for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss). Research suggests that photobiomodulation may stimulate hair follicles and support the active growth phase of the hair cycle, potentially improving hair density and thickness over time.

How often should I use red light therapy?

For most devices, we recommend following the manufacturer's instructions. Many people incorporate red light therapy into their wellness routine 3–7 times per week, with sessions typically lasting 10–20 minutes, depending on the device and treatment area. Consistency is generally more important than longer sessions.

How long until I see results?

Everyone's experience is different. Some people notice changes within a few weeks, while others may require several months of consistent use. Results depend on factors such as your wellness goals, the device used, and how regularly you follow the recommended treatment schedule.

Does it hurt?

No. Red light therapy is a non-invasive and painless treatment. Most users describe the experience as relaxing, with a gentle warming sensation depending on the device. There are no needles, medications, or recovery time required.

Is it safe?

Red light therapy has been widely studied and is considered safe for most people when used as directed. Our products are designed to use non-ionizing red and near-infrared light, which is different from UV light and does not tan or burn the skin when used according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, have light sensitivity, or are taking medications that increase sensitivity to light, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider before use.

Can I overuse it?

More isn't always better.
